Diabetic Evaluation
From the day you are diagnosed with diabetes, you are given increased responsibility to maintain your health. It is not only vital to manage your blood sugar levels, but also to maintain regular evaluations for early detection and treatment of diabetic complications. The possible complications are many and certainly include your eyes, primarily as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts. Annual examinations along with the Optomap retinal examination are critical elements in ensuring that you are getting complete care. The Optomap retinal examination permits a detailed look at the blood vessels at the back of the eye to detect dot hemorrhages and micro-aneurysms - early indicators of diabetic retinopathy. Laser treatment of diabetic retinopathy results in killing part of the retina in order to save the most critical areas of the retina. Ideally, we never want to reach a point where treatment is needed. The best management is to keep your blood sugar level between 4 and 7. Request the Optomap retinal examination at your next visit so that our doctors can show you any areas of risk.
