Glaucoma Care
Drs. Arnal & Laturnas have a special interest in caring for patients with glaucoma. Since 1997 optometrists have been granted the rights to write prescriptions for topical drops for patients. This paved the way for primary eyecare providers (optometrists) to manage glaucoma patients closer to their homes. Prairie Vision Centre performs glaucoma monitoring using the latest in technology - retinal fibre layer imaging. By joining a group of like-minded optometrists, they have purchased an HRT instrument and have hired a technician to perform the testing. In addition to this state-of-the-art level of care, we also offer comprehensive visual field testing, Goldmann applanation tonometry (the gold standard in glaucoma care), central corneal thickness measurement, and gonioscopy. The doctors at Prairie Vision Centre continue to co-manage glaucoma patients with specialists based upon the level of individual care needed. By having a great working relationship with glaucoma specialists, this ensures that you will always get the care you need, often without driving to Edmonton!
Do you have a family member with glaucoma? If so, you run an increased chance of developing glaucoma. It's important that you be screened at least every 2 years, and more frequently if any indicator is found to show additional concern. Annual screening is recommended for all patients who have suffered an eye injury that resulted in the pooling of blood in the eye, for those with diabetes, and when both parents have been diagnosed with glaucoma.
Treatment of glaucoma has greatly improved over the past couple of decades. New eyedrops have been proven to decrease side effects and increase efficacy of control. Laser treatments to reduce eye pressure by improving outflow of excess aqueous humor (the fluid that builds up in the front chamber of the eye in chronic open angle glaucoma) have also improved in the past decade. Speak to one of our optometrists to evaluate your care plan.
